Can You Donate a Car Without a Title?
Often, yes. A title proves who owns the car, so it's usually needed to transfer it, but a missing title rarely ends a donation. In many states you can order a replacement title for free, and our team can walk you through what your state requires. Call 1-866-770-5463 before you give up on donating.
Common Title Situations
"I lost my title." The most common case, and usually the easiest to fix. Most state motor vehicle agencies let the registered owner request a duplicate, and in many states a replacement for a donation can be ordered free.
"The car is in a family member's name." For example, a parent who passed away. The person with legal authority over the car, such as an executor or surviving owner, usually needs to sign. Rules differ by state.
"There's an old loan on the title." If the loan is paid off but the lender is still listed, you may need a lien release from the lender. We can help you figure out what to ask for.
When you call, have the year, make and model, the VIN (on the driver's side dashboard or door frame), the state where it's registered, and whose name is on the registration.
Once ownership is clear, the rest is simple: free towing anywhere in the U.S., often same-day or next-day. You don't need to be home, the car doesn't have to run, and you get a tax-deductible receipt.
